If I wasn’t a wrench, I’d be…

Surfing, riding bicycles and motorcycles, maybe some more surfing, can you get paid for that??

In his own words

You return to the organization after a one-year hiatus. What brought you back to the team, other than your previous team folding?
I like the “family style” of the Momentum Sports organization, good people trying to give the riders the best environment to excel in a chill fashion.

What are you looking forward to this season?
Washing bikes…

What are you not looking forward to?
Washing bikes….

What other cycling teams have you worked with in the past?
I’ve been around pro cycling in the support mode for many years…
Spago ‘90-’91
Coors Light ‘92-’94
Various national team programs ‘95
U.S. Postal ‘96
Hiatus
Sierra Nevada ‘04
Navigators ‘05
Health Net pb Maxxis 2006-07
Toyota-United, 2008

How/why did you end up working with a professional cycling team?
Moved to Boulder to go climbing in ‘89 and ended up living next door to Pete Davis, then teammate of Scott Moninger on Team Crest. Pete was just starting with Spago in ‘90, they needed a mechanic. I was broke and ready for adventure.

Is your background working in bike shops?
No, never worked in a shop. My father raced bikes in the ’60s - those guys raced fixed gears in crits, kinda crazy. We always had bikes and my brother and I liked to take everything apart. I started road racing when I was 13 or 14. Left college to pursue that again and thought I’d take my brief engineering studies knowledge to a local D.C. frame builder, Alpine Cycles, to make some cash. Somehow Fred Kelley said ‘yes’ and sand blasting ensued. That was the real basis of my bike mechanic knowledge. I learned frame building, wheel building and much more, like darts and good beer. Thanks Fred!

Are you a cyclist yourself?
Yes. As long as I can remember and that will continue for as long as I’m here. I’ve ridden and raced most types of bikes, sometimes okay, mostly mediocre though. Epic climbs and ripping descents in the Pisgah with my bros is the current expression that gets me where I need to be. Shout out to the Boone Bike crew.

What are your interests outside of cycling?
Photography, climbing, falconry, surfing, motorcycles, reading, music, philosophy/religion, observing and interacting with the natural world, being part of the Is….
