What are your goals or expectations for the 2009 season?
I would like to be an integral part of the success achieved by Team OUCH, whether by posting victories myself, or by helping teammates achieve wins. In terms of expectations, I expect this team to pick up where Health Net left off and be a force to be reckoned with at every race.
How did you spend this past off-season? What did your off-season training program look like?
Jeremy Storie is my coach and he had me doing lots of specific wattage workouts on the bike, some xc skiing when the weather got ugly, and lots of track riding at the Burnaby Velodrome (until the roof caved in).
You’ve been racing for, essentially, more than half your life. What still fuels your passion to race?
It’s pretty simple: I love this sport, the racing, the travel, the camaraderie, and winning. The day that I lose the passion I have for racing and stop enjoying it, is the day I call it a career.
Do you think having a cyclocross background will endear you to team captain Tim Johnson?
Probably not. He is a way better ‘crosser than I was, am, and ever will be. Although I don’t think he beat me by much at 1997 World Champs. I think I was 2nd last and Tim was a couple places ahead.
Did getting a degree in Geography make you the go-to guy for reading course maps and profiles?
Only if we’re trying to read an earthquake hazard or a disease prevalence map. In terms of profiles, my former teammates will tell you I’m pretty useless at that. Once at the Tour of Utah thought a 15-mile Hors Cat. climb would be easy highway grade based on the profile. It wasn’t.
Who were/are your cycling mentors and/or influences?
I have plenty of people who have been big influences for me. In particular though, I would say my father and John Harris have been the biggest influences on my career. My father has supported and encouraged me my entire career, while John mentored me when I first began road racing.
What was your first bike? When/how did you get it?
It was a yellow cruiser bike I got when I was 7 or 8. I crashed on it and left it on the street while I went to get bandaged up. Unfortunately, some guys from a local biker gang saw it on the street and decide it would be fun to run it over.
What was your first win?
A cyclocross race in Toronto put on by Mike Barry Sr., in 1992.
What would you consider your finest moment on the bike?
Several moments come to mind but a couple standouts include winning the final stage of the Tour de Beauce in 2007, and helping Svein Tuft win the 2007 U.S. Open.
What was your worst or most embarrassing moment on the bike?
Any time you crash and have your arse hanging out your shorts it’s pretty embarrassing.
What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen on a bike ride?
Having an irate Kiwi driver swerve and try to run me off the road only to run himself into the ditch, hit a large boulder, total his truck and blame me for it.
What’s the strangest thing you’ve done on a bike ride?
Go pick up a truck from the Port Renfrew First Nations reserve.
What’s the one thing you’ve done on a ride (training or race) that you will absolutely never do again?
Go on an “easy” ride with Floyd Landis without lights.
When you’re not on your bike, what do you like to do?
Spend time with my wife.
If you weren’t a professional cyclist, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be sitting behind a desk.
