New York Times on Landis’ return to racing

Floyd signs autographs

Following the seventh stage of the Amgen Tour of California, Floyd Landis met briefly with the media in a press conference held in a room packed with reporters and journalists. Bill Witz of the New York Times wrote this story of Landis’ uncertain return to bike racing, and the delight he has taken in being back in the pro peloton.

On his immediate impressions about racing in this year’s Tour of California, Landis quipped:

“I missed bicycle racing. I spent a large part of my life doing it. For the last few years, I’ve been gone. It feels good to be back. I don’t know what the long-term goals are. It gets to a point where goals are very shortsighted. Like right now, I’m going to go find a place to lie down.”

Floyd was robbed of his victory and subjected to unfair shame and ridicule. I want to see him rise above it all and become the champ again. I still relish the day he kicked all their asses up that mountain and I can’t wait to see it again. Welcome back and go get’em Floyd!

Floyd we miss you in the Tour De France. Hope you will return and win “again”. They will make a movie of you called “chariots of Floyd”.

It would definitely be great to see Floyd come back — juice-free — and show he can do it the right way, and win big… that would be my goal if I were in his shoes. No one, like him or not, could say he is a looser if he comes back and wins, no one.

Floyd was robbed of his life and title by a corrupt and totally incompetent testing regime - anyone who listened to the arbitration hearings couldn’t help be anything but outraged over the pathetic “evidence” that was presented - from improper calibration to physically impossible test results, it was a show trial similar to what Judge Roy Bean was famous for - giving a fair trial before hanging the defendant…

Welcome back Floyd. I missed seeing you in the TdF ITT in Monaco today…

I finally dug up the raw data that was used for the hearing and calling the result a sham is an understatement. As a chromatographer that data was unacceptable.

Welcome back Floyd, I can’t wait to see you rise to the top of the cycling world again soon.

Welcome back Floyd, to many of us you will always be the true Yellow Jersey of the 2006 Tour de France. Looking foreward to seeing you in yellow again. You are an inspiration.

It is so good to see Floyd Landis back on the bike. He has been a huge inspiration to me as a young person dealng with bone health issues while trying to continue an active life. I hope this is the start of many amazing years of seeing Landis kick ass on the road.
